Inside the WLA Prize: Celebrate the Trailblazers of Science

Date Nov. 5, 2023

Chairs of the 2023 WLA Prize Selection Committees, Prof. Michael I. Jordan and Prof. Randy Schekman, gave their thoughts on the WLA Prize's vision as the major yearly occasion, with the Award Ceremony approaching soon on Nov. 6, 2023.

Prof. Jordan, who chairs the WLA Prize Selection Committee in Computer Science or Mathematics and has been a prominent figure in machine learning, thinks that the Prize would acknowledge the merging of maths and computer science, showcasing the vital functions they play in practical applications that affect our everyday existence. Prof. Schekman, the 2013 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine and Chair of the WLA Prize in Life Science or Medicine, appreciates the increasing impact Asia is having within the scientific community. He believes that the WLA Prize, created in Shanghai, will bring together the East and West, uniting them in the scientific community.

The Chairs share the view that the WLA Prize intends to recognize people who have achieved innovative work but have not been acknowledged globally yet, celebrate scientific accomplishments from all over the world, and honour remarkable individuals who can have a lasting influence and imagine future concepts.
